Seeded by the Political Arts Initiative and funded by a Spotlight grant from the Ministry of Culture in Taiwan, the inaugural iteration of this Artist-in-Residence scheme at Leiden University will be hosted by the University's Honours Academy in 2014. This residency of one to three months, by invitation to a Taiwanese artist whose work enriches and resonates with the overall interdisciplinary research and innovative environment of Leiden University, seeks to complement the innovative and diverse offerings of the university, which in turn supports artistic research and encourages creative inspiration.

For a taste of the political and artistic context of and inspiration for Dr. Shen's work, this video edited by Limo Baroud (BA Global Challenges: Political Arts, LUC Class of 2013) captures the politics of sexuality, the complexities of gender (re)presentation, and the art of visualisation which will underpin the intellectual and practical fabric of Dr. Shen's residency, alongside post-colonial dynamics in the East Asian region and cultural subversions in and of Taiwan.

Residency activities included:
- An Artist-in-Residence Workshop Series, with three masterclasses to introduce the resident artist's work and creative process (4, 11, 18 June).
- Office hours for deeper conversations and exploratory synergies to emerge.
- A final exhibition, with an accompanying lecture, to share the results of the residency (30 June 2014).
- A touring exhibition of the creative output of the residency and the masterclasses (1 September - 31 December 2014).
Additional activities included:
- A guest screening and discussion of docu-anime and anime fan culture at The Nutshuis (4 June).
- A research-in-progress seminar at Leiden University's Centre for Innovation in The Hague on the development of occupational and quality-of-life visual tools, with participation of scholars and practitioners from Erasmus University Rotterdam, International Institute of Social Studies, Leiden University, Royal Academy of Art, University of Amsterdam, VU University Amsterdam, as well as independent consultants based in The Hague.
